Food Styling Short Course – Level 2

The Food Styling Short Course Level 2 is designed for students who have completed the Level 1 course to further their food styling knowledge. We go behind the scenes into a kitchen environment where you will be shown a variety of food styling techniques, tips and tricks that are commonly used on shoots to create the final shot.

You will be shown advanced components of food styling for photography, professional cooking presentations and practical advice so you understand what goes into styling the final shot for a brief. You will have access to a kitchen so any cooking required can be done in class. You will work on a minimum of four styled shots over the two days to build on your folio.

You’ll also get hands-on experience in exactly what it’s like to work on a food shoot – from conceptualising and planning, to sourcing props, right through to getting the styled look just right. You’ll leave the two-day weekend workshop with a deeper insight into food styling, one-on-one time with professional stylist Bianca Christoff as you style your very own food shoot and a professional photograph of your styled look to start your food styling portfolio.

This course is perfect for:

  • Aspiring food stylists wanting to learn from the pros and advance their techniques
  • Foodie social media buffs who want food shots on their blog, Instagram or Pinterest to be to a cut above the rest
  • Creative entrepreneurs whose businesses rely on stunningly styled shots
  • Food industry professionals
  • Those wanting to publish their own recipe collection
  • Photographers wanting to expand their styling knowledge

Over Two Days You’ll Learn

Day One

The first day is based around teaching/ demonstrating actual cooking techniques such as browning meats, chilling glasses, working with cooked food and food placement techniques.

You will also complete two styled looks based on information sent prior to course commencement. Your styled looks will incorporate information you have learnt on Day One.

Day One also sees the introduction of a brief you will be required to style the following week. This includes all the research and preparation you would need to do if you were a stylist working on an actual job brief.

Day 2

You will be working in the same way a food stylist does on a job. This means you will be putting into practice all the research and hard work you have done to style a shot for a very specific job brief/ client or magazine. This could include something like turning a flat pack of food into a sumptuous lifestyle shot, or coming up with the concept theme and look that would be specific to the requirements of a food magazine. It’s your chance to work as a food stylist as you would in the ‘real world’.

Most importantly, you will be guided along the way so you can meet the brief outcomes and target market expectations of that brief for the ‘client’.

Your final styled looks will be shot by a professional photographer so you can walk away with some amazing folio shots to start building on your Food Styling future.

We hope to see you there!
